終於寫完論文啦............

“Fair is Foul and Foul is Fair”

How many times have people been misjudged based solely on appearances? People that appear to be good and sweet may be evil underneath. For instance, today seemingly loving mothers murder their children; unsuspecting priests take advantage of small children; politicians appear just, yet swarm in corruption. The opposite is also true: people or institutions that may appear to be uncaring or corrupted may be just the opposite. Additionally, in our society, people often judge other based on their looks; people who are not physically attractive may be considered “foul” when, in reality, they may be more “fair than foul”. In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the idea of what is “fair is foul and foul is fair” is presented and this idea is as relevant today as it was in the early 1600s when Shakespeare composed this work.

The idea of “fair and foul” is introduced at the start of the play by the three witches. As they discuss when they will “meet again”, the witches claim, “fair is foul, and foul is fair.” The theme of things not being what they seem is immediately introduced. As Act I continues, Macbeth himself claims he has not seen a day as “foul and fair” as the present one. On this “foul” day, he is given an honor, something “fair”: he is to be the new Thane of Cawdor since the former thane was a traitor. This suggests that Macbeth is a true and loyal subject to his king. Shortly after, in Act II, scene iii, Macbeth, the once honored subject, murders the king for his own gain. Consequently, that which appears “fair”, Macbeth, is actually “foul”.

Moreover, Lady Macbeth also appears “fair” when she is actually “foul”. Upon learning prophesies of the witches, she becomes determined to make the prophecy come true. She tells her husband to “look like the innocent flower,/but be the serpent under’t,” (Act I, scene vi, In 70-71). Her idea is to make King Duncan feel welcomed upon his arrival and murder him during the night, thus looking kind while planning treason. Lady Macbeth uses her woman charm as a mask as, upon the king’s arrival, she gives Duncan her hand to lead him to Macbeth. Later, it is that same hand that will arrange the daggers for the murder; it is the same hand that will be stained with guilt from her part in the crime.

In the Macbeth world, Macbeth was a good fighter at the beginning, after he talked with three witches, he become bad, but nobody know that, Because he hide his evil mind. And everybody thought that he is a good leader, because nobody knows he talked to three witches and, what does he think about three witches speech.

The idea of “fair is foul” also holds true in modern society. For example, In Houston, Texas, Andrea Yates, a seemingly caring mother, was sentenced to life in prison after killing her children by downing them in a bathtub (Washington Time 2004). In Wheaton, Illinois, a man was charged with killing his 16 year-old daughter by stabbing, poisoning and beating her to prevent her from testifying against him for sexually assaulting her (Sun-Times 2007). These seemingly regular “fair” people are, indeed, more “foul than fair”.

In south Florida, there has a teacher has sex with a 16-years old female student. Their relationship allegedly took place between February 2006 and August 2006. Police allege the two engaged in sexual activity on school property and at a Miami area hotel while he was a teacher at the school. (Cps4 news 2006)This is the “fair is foul”. Teacher’s behavior also easy to let child or student follow, so their behavior also is gentle. But this teacher, he did the opposite behavior.

On the other hand, people or instances may prove to be “fair” when they appear “foul”. In Macbeth, Lady Macduff siad her husband leave her and her son. She thinks that a perfect husband doesn’t leave his family. Macduff actually isn’t that bad; he need s to find Malcolm to fight with Macbeth. So macduff want to save the country and that’s why he leaves.

In Modern society, some impprtant person did something like “foul is fair”. For example, President Bush, he makes a new Iraq’s plan. He wants to increase more troops to Iraq.(Yahoo news 2006) Some say, Bush doesn’t let Iranians control themselves. But Iranians actually can’t control themseleves, because Iranians killed their past leader with hanging ruthlessly. They have this ruthless behavior with control, so they couldn’t control themselevs. So President Bush increase more troops to Iraq, that doesn’t mean that he wants to make a war, or he wants to control Iraq. He just doesn’t want the ruthless behavior stay at the democracy.
